Who we are

The KEMRI–Wellcome Trust Research Programme is a partnership between the Kenya Medical Research Institute, the Wellcome Trust, and the University of Oxford. Established in 1989, the Programme conducts multidisciplinary research spanning molecular and cellular science, clinical research, epidemiology, population health, health systems, economics, and policy research. It is headquartered in Kilifi, with an additional research hub in Nairobi and a collaborative site at the Mbale Clinical Research Institute in eastern Uganda. KWTRP works through strong national, regional, and global partnerships to deliver high-quality, innovative science and develop health research capacity.

Our Anchors

The KWTRP strategic plan is anchored in three interlinked pillars: impact, sustainability, and culture. These pillars reflect our vision of a research institution that generates high-quality science translating into locally and internationally relevant and meaningful improvements in health and well-being, while operating on a financially, environmentally, and operationally sustainable foundation, and defined by an inclusive, empowering, and values-driven research culture.

Impact

From evidence to impact - science that shapes healthier futures at scale.

Sustainability

Built to last - resilient science, smart systems, sustainable impact.

Culture

Where people thrive, leaders grow, and values shape impact.
